The exhaust system is the silent twin of the engine, when it works, you forget about it; when it fails, it costs as much as the engine to fix. In the UAE, two things conspire against exhausts: coastal humidity that corrodes pipes from outside, and 50-degree underbody heat that bakes catalytic converters from inside. Add the occasional Hatta or Liwa rock-strike and you have an exhaust system that needs a closer look than the seller will encourage.
This is the twentieth category in our 25-category, 410-plus-checkpoint inspection. Nine focused exhaust and emissions checks performed on the lift and at the tailpipe, each one a clear pass-or-fail signal about whether the car will pass the RTA emissions test on registration day.
Why exhausts fail differently in the UAE
Coastal cars (Sharjah Corniche, Ajman beach, Khor Fakkan, RAK shore) corrode from the outside in, surface rust on the muffler and resonator that progresses to pin-holes within 6 to 8 years. Inland cars (most of Dubai, Al Ain, inland Sharjah) usually have cleaner exhausts but suffer cat-converter heat damage from years of summer stop-and-go driving. Pickup trucks and SUVs that spent weekends in Liwa often have crushed mid-pipes from rock strikes. The pattern of damage tells you where the car has been.
The 9 exhaust and emissions checkpoints
1. Exhaust Manifold
Three states: Good, Cracked, Leaking gasket. The cast-iron or stamped-steel collector that mates to the cylinder head. Cracked manifolds cause a tick that mimics a lifter noise and rises with engine RPM. Replacement: 1,500 to 6,000 AED. On twin-turbo German V8s the manifolds and turbos are one assembly: 8,000 to 25,000 AED.
2. Catalytic Converter
Three states: Good, Inefficient (P0420 / P0430), Failed / hollow / stolen. The most expensive single component on this list. We tap the body with a soft mallet, a rattle inside means the substrate has crumbled. We also pull stored OBD codes. UAE-specific note: cat-converter theft is rare here compared to the US, but used cars from grey-import sources sometimes arrive with hollowed cats fitted with a fake oxygen-sensor signal. Replacement OEM: 4,000 to 18,000 AED.
3. Oxygen Sensors
Three states: OK, Slow response, Failed. Most cars have two to four sensors. We connect our Autel MaxiSys MS909 OBD scanner and watch the upstream sensor switch between rich and lean voltages 1 to 2 times per second at idle, and the downstream sensor stay flat. A slow upstream sensor causes high fuel consumption and eventually fails the cat-converter behind it. Replacement: 350 to 1,500 AED per sensor.
4. Muffler
Three states: Good, Surface rust, Holed / damaged. The rear silencer. Coastal cars rust the muffler first because it sits low and collects condensation. A holed muffler is loud, fails RTA noise testing, and causes interior cabin fumes. Replacement: 600 to 2,500 AED for a stock unit.
5. Exhaust Pipes
Three states: Good, Surface rust, Pin-hole / crushed. The mid-pipes between manifold, cat, and muffler. We listen along each pipe for hisses (small leaks) and look for crush damage. Replacement of a mid-pipe section: 600 to 2,000 AED.
6. Exhaust Mounts / Hangers
Three states: Good, Worn, Broken. The rubber hangers and metal brackets holding the exhaust to the underbody. Broken hangers cause the exhaust to bang against the floor on speed bumps. Replacement: 50 to 200 AED per hanger.
7. Heat Shields
Three states: Intact, Loose / rattling, Missing. The thin metal shields between the exhaust and the floor pan. Loose heat shields rattle on cold start and at idle, a cheap and easy fix often misdiagnosed as engine noise. Replacement or refit: 150 to 600 AED.
8. Exhaust Leaks (audible)
Three states: None, Minor, Major. We hold a rag near each joint and listen for the puff-puff sound of a leak. Minor leaks before the cat-converter cause it to overheat and fail. Leak fix: 200 to 800 AED for a flange gasket; up to 2,500 AED if a flexible-section needs welding.
9. Exhaust Tips
Two states: Good, Damaged / mismatched. The visible tailpipes. Heavy black soot inside indicates rich running (fuel system issue). Heavy oil inside indicates engine valve seal or piston ring wear. Mismatched aftermarket tips are cosmetic and not a fault.
Patterns the exhaust inspection reveals
- P0420 + slow front O2 + black soot in tip: rich-running engine has been killing the cat for thousands of km. Fix the fuel system first; cat replacement second. AED 1,500 + AED 6,000 minimum.
- Heavy muffler rust + intact mid-pipes + coastal vehicle: classic Sharjah Corniche / Khor Fakkan car. Muffler-only fix: AED 800 to 2,500.
- Crushed mid-pipe + skid plate damage + 4WD truck: a Liwa or Hatta rock strike. Inspect the differential and the underbody too.
- Loud exhaust + missing cat shield + grey-import: cat may have been gutted to make room for an aftermarket exhaust. Walk away or budget AED 6,000 to 12,000 for a proper cat.

- Catalytic converter (OEM): 4,000 to 18,000 AED.
- Oxygen sensor: 350 to 1,500 AED each.
- Muffler: 600 to 2,500 AED.
- Mid-pipe section: 600 to 2,000 AED.

Book the inspection before the RTA test
Failing the RTA emissions test on registration day costs you a re-test fee plus the rush-job repair price at whatever workshop the seller recommends. The 8-minute exhaust lift inspection plus the OBD emissions read tells you in advance whether the car will pass, and if not, what it will cost to fix on your timeline, with workshops you choose. We come to the car in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain. Two to three hours on site. Digital report within 24 hours.
Take this 9-point list with you. Walk around the car with the engine cold-started and listen for ticks, hisses, and rattles. Reach down and gently shake each tailpipe, a loose tailpipe means broken hangers. Look at the inside of the tailpipe for soot and oil. Honest sellers will let you. The others will rush, and that is the answer telling you to slow it down.
